What You Need To Know About Psychiatric Advanced Directives (PADs)

A PAD is an advance directive that outlines your preferences for a time when you cannot make mental health decisions or communicate your wishes yourself. It is a legal document, like a living will, that states YOUR wishes, for YOUR treatment. If you or one you love is affected by mental illness, addiction, or any other health condition where symptoms could result in hospitalization at a psychiatric facility, completing a PAD is a vital tool of self-advocacy and effective crisis planning.
